Coronary Heart Disease
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a disorder of the blood vessels around the heart in which the blood supply is insufficient to deliver the oxygen needed by the heart muscle. CHD is the leading cause of death in many developed countries, and accounts for 17% of all deaths in Australia.
More than 20% of CHD worldwide may be related to lack of physical activity or exercise.
Regular moderate-intensity exercise has many benefits for people with CHD, such as:
- preventing the blood vessels from narrowing further;
- preventing blood clots;
- helping to deliver blood to the heart;
- helping to maintain a normal heart beat;
- reducing stress on the heart at rest and during exercise; and
- reducing some of the symptoms, and risk of death from CHD.
